Herrenchiemsee: magnificent royal palace in the centre of Lake Chiemsee

On this tour we take you to the largest lake in Bavaria: Lake Chiemsee. Departing from Munich, our bus will take you to Prien. It's a lovely ride along the mountain range of the Alps that will last for about an hour. In Prien you will take a ferryboat to cross the so-called Bavarian Sea to the lovely island of Herrenchiemsee, where Herrenchiemsee Palace is situated. It was built in the 19th century by "fairy tale" King Ludwig II. Styling himself as a descendant of King Louis XIV, it was his dream was to create a Bavarian version of famous Versailles. After a visit of Herrenchiemsee island and the castle you will continue to Fraueninsel - just a quick hop to the next island on lake Chiemsee. Take a leisurely stroll around the car-free and cycle-free island and just enjoy ... The special island flair that you will surely feel is completed by fresh Chiemsee fish, to be tasted in numerous restaurants and beer gardens. Once there you shouldn't miss to visit Frauenwörth Monastery, the oldest nunnery in Germany, that also runs a store with Chiemsee specialties, right next to one of the piers.

By the way:
Rides are assured by Chiemsee Schifffahrt, a renowned Chiemgau company that has been taking visitors as well as residents to the islands for decades. You may be lucky and get to ride on Ludwig Feßler, the most antique ship of the fleet.
